The 2016 tournament – the third since the IPTL’s inception – will feature only four teams and be played at just three venues. Last year there were five teams and the same number of host cities.

With political unrest in their country, the Philippine Mavericks have dropped out of the competition.

Manila is therefore off the schedule, as is Dubai, although the UAE Royals have still entered.

The event will begin on December 2 with a three-day stunt in Saitama, near Tokyo. From there it will head to Singapore from December 6-8. The last leg, which will include the final, will be held in Hyderabad with the Indian Aces having relocated from Delhi.

The teams will each play eight matches in the league stage with the top two qualifying for a one-off final.

IPTL founder Mahesh Bhupathi spoke of “difficult choices” having had to be made when launching the event on Thursday.

A longer, five-city schedule had initially been announced. While there are hopes for a return to such a format in 2017, the long-term future of the short-format tennis tournament will doubtless by called into question in some quarters.

The competition sees matches comprised of five sets – one in each of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles and legends’ singles.

Widely seen as tennis’ answer to cricket’s Twenty20 format, it includes Power Points – worth double – player substitutions, no service lets and a shot clock.

IPTL 2016 team rosters:
