LONDON, Great Britain – No.5 seed Caroline Wozniacki eased into the third round of Wimbledon after a comprehensive win over former semifinalist Tsvetana Pironkova, 6-3, 6-4.

“I was happy with the match today,” Wozniacki said in her post-match press conference. “She’s a tricky opponent. I thought I played aggressive as well, defended where I needed to.

“It was a good match all in all.”

Coming off a run to the final at the Aegon Classic Eastbourne and a tough first-round encounter with Timea Babos, Wozniacki took a few games to get herself settled against Pironkova.

She traded breaks early on against the No.131-ranked Bulgarian, but once she found her range on Court No.2 the momentum firmly turned to the Dane’s side. Wozniacki kept Pironkova under pressure, picking her off at will to reel off the last four games in a row and take the opening set.

In the second set, Wozniacki faced a bit more fightback as the pair once again traded breaks early on before settling into a run of baseline exchanges.

Racing against the fading light at the All England Club, Wozniacki finally earned the decisive break in the final game, wrapping up the match in a tidy one hour and 22 minutes.

“I was trying not to think too much about [the darkness], but I knew it was going to get dark out there,” she said. “I was trying to keep my focus and trying to win in two sets.

“I feel like I’m hitting well. I’m pleased so far.”

Wozniacki will take on Anett Kontaveit next as she bids for a return to the fourth round, though she’ll be eager to do one better. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam where the Dane has failed to reach at least the Grand Slams; she’s made the round of 16 five times in her previous 11 main draw appearances.
