The Bhim Nation record label signee has something to say about this particular genre.
According to Kelvyn Boy, the genre was so much inspired by the high-life genre of Ghana to be attributed to only Nigeria like it was originally founded by them.
Making reference to the Legendary Fela Kuti who coined the name “Afrobeat”, Kelvyn Boy stated that, Fela confessed he got so much inspiration from the Ghanaian music genre – High-Life.
“Nigeria do not own Afrobeat alone, we Ghanaians also own Afrobeat as well. The genre is not for one particular country, it’s for Africa as a whole if we’re being honest.
“If you read about Afrobeat there’s High-Life in there. Yes, Fela may have named the genre Afrobeat, but he actually confessed that he got so much inspiration from Ghanaian genre, High-life. Fela lived in Ghana a couple of times. Anything Afro stands for African as a whole, not just one particular country in Africa. We’ve been lying to ourselves for a very long time.” Kelvyn Boy said in an interview with Abeiku Santana on Atuu TV.
