Six times World Footballer of the year, Lionel Messi and Barcelona have finally agreed to a 5-year deal, Messi will have his release clause set at 350 million euros.
He’s likely to play at Barça for two more seasons, although the club don’t rule out that he can fulfill the five years. After two years, the most likely scenario is that he’ll go and play in Miami.
Messi has also accepted to lower his salary by at least 50%, respecting Barcelona’s financial situation, Barcelona expects approval from La Liga to register Messi tonight.
Messi was a free agent after his contract at Barca expired and he had courted interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City since first revealing a desire to end his 20-year relationship with Barca last summer. The 34-year-old’s previous contract was worth over €500m and that expired at the stroke of midnight on July 1.
However, with the return of Joan Laporta as president in March, Messi grew more open to staying at Camp Nou. An official announcement is expected in the coming days.
