Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (born September 15, 1977) is a Nigerian author who has written novels, short tales, and nonfiction.

According to the Times Literary Supplement, she is the most prominent of a procession of highly appreciated young Anglophone authors who are influential in exposing a new generation of readers to African literature, particularly in the United States, which is thought to be her second home.

The feminist author, Adichie, has her name attached to many books, some of which is Purple Hibiscus, published in 2003; the Biafran Half of a Yellow Sun, published in 2006; and Americanah in 2013.

We Should All Be Feminists in 2014 and the short story collection, The Thing around your Neck in 2009. Moreover, she has her recent books, some of which are Notes on Grief, Sikora, and more.

Early Life

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is the fifth of six children in an Igbo family born in the city of Enugu in Nigeria. Her father, James Nwoye Adichie (1932-2020), was married to her mother, Grace Ifeom (1942-2021).

However, her father was a Professor of statistics at the University of Nigeria, where she attended school, while her mother was the University’s first female registrar.

Adichie completed her education at the University of Nigeria secondary school, Nsukka, and studied Medicine and Pharmacy for a year and a half. At the same time, she edited the University’s Catholic Medical Students’ Magazine titled The Compass.

To study communications and political science, Adichie, at age 19, left Nigeria for Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She later transferred to Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU), where she got a Bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in 2001.

Master of Creative writing in 2003 at Johns Hopkins University and Master of Arts in African studies in 2008 from Yale University.

She holds sixteen honorary doctorate degrees from some of the world’s best Universities, including Yale, Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, and more. Still, it was at the Catholic University of Louvain that she got her sixteenth.

During the 2005/2006 academic year, she was a Hodder fellow at Princeton University, a one-year fellowship of financial support.

CAREER

Her Initial and Original inspiration was derived from Chinua Achebe after reading his book Things Fall Apart (1958) at age 10. More inspiration was drawn from other Authors, like Buchi Emecheta, upon whose death Adichie said: Buchi Emecheta.

In 2002/2003, Adichie won the David T. Wong International Short Story Prize for the PEN Center Award.

Half of a Yellow Sun, her second novel, was adapted into a film directed by Biyi Bandele. BAFTA award-winner, Academy nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, and BAFTA winner Thandiwe Newton starred in the film. The film was released in 2014.

From 2015 to 2020, Adichie had taken a role as co-curator of the PEN World Voices Festival, written and published a new book titled Dear Ijeawele, been elected into the 237th class of the American Academy of Arts and Science, and published Sikora, a stand-alone Short Story about sexism and single motherhood.

Adichie released a memoir based on her father’s death in May 2021, titled Notes on Grief.
