On Sunday, October 6th, 2022, a riot broke out during a town hall presidential discussion broadcast on Arise Television.
The raucous unrest, which was allegedly instigated by Obidents, Labour Party supporters, occurred against the backdrop of Atiku Abubakar’s choice to send his running partner, Ifeanyi Okowa, to represent him at the event.
It was gathered that ‘ Obidents’ rejected Okowa’s speech, demanding that Atiku, the PDP presidential candidate, speaks to them directly and not by proxy.
“The People have woken up. If you are not ready to speak to Nigerians, you have no business contesting, attendees echoed in a now-viral video from the event.
Reacting, Nigerians shared mixed views on their respective platforms.
Reno Omokri, a socio-political commentator reacted on Twitter saying: “Arise TV ought to have security at their Town-hall Presidential Debate. The behaviour of Obidients, who disrupted the event, is not a good sign. Their IPOB like behaviour threatens the electoral process. There must always be law and order. This chaos is unbecoming!*
The event also saw the absence of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.
