Roberto Martinez reaches verbal agreement to become Portugal’s coach

Roberto Martinez has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Portugal to become their new head coach weeks after his exit as Belgium’s coach, following the country’s “golden generation” poor performance at the 2022 World Cup.

Martinez who was Wigan Athletic and Everton’s coach between 2009 and 2016, reportedly had offers from clubs and other international teams after leaving Belgium.

However, The Athletic reported that Martinez has now reached an agreement with Portugal who parted ways with the national team’s coach, Fernando Santos, after their quarter-final defeat to Morocco in Qatar.

The deal between Martinez and Portugal is expected to be finalized by the end of the week, with an announcement coming shortly after.
