Former Senate Deputy President Ike Ekweremadu has denied offering money to David Ukpo, a 21-year-old trader, to donate his kidney for his sick daughter, Sonia.
The lawmaker, his wife, Beatrice, and their 25-year-old daughter are accused of trafficking Ukpo from Nigeria to serve as a kidney donor.
The Ekweremadus were accused of offering £7,000 to the Ukpo, whom they flew to London and misrepresented as Sonia’s cousin in order to obtain his kidney.
According to Daily Mail, in his opening addresses at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, Ekweremadu’s lawyer, Martin Hicks, insisted they believed the donor was acting “altruistically”.
