The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has appointed nine Senior Advocates of Nigeria to defend the results of the just-concluded February 25 presidential polls.
According to City Lawyer, the team will be led by former Nigerian Bar Association President Abubakar Mahmoud. Stephen Adehi (SAN), Oluwakemi Pinheiro (SAN), Miannaya Essien (SAN), and Abdullahi Aliyu are also members of the team.
According to a member of the legal team, four SANs who work in INEC’s legal department are also on the team, along with Garba Hassan, Musa Attah, and Patricia Obi.
INEC has budgeted over N3 billion to defend the results of the presidential and national assembly elections on February 25 and the governorship and state assembly elections on March 18.
Several candidates who were defeated in the elections have petitioned the presidential and state election petition tribunals to overturn the results.
Over 100 election petitions have been filed across the country by dissatisfied candidates and parties.
The presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, the Labour Party, Peter Obi, the Action Alliance, Solomon Okangbuan, and the Allied Peoples Movement, Chichi Ojei, have all filed petitions to have the presidential election results annulled.
The commission had on March 1, 2023, declared Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, as the winner of the February 25 presidential election.
