The 2023 presidential election was the most talked about election in Nigeria, and many people were disappointed with the results because their preferred candidate did not win.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained why Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress was declared the winner of the February 25 presidential election despite receiving less than 25% of the vote in the federal capital region.
According to Vanguard Online, INEC’s attorney B. Mahmoud stated that the FCT should be recognized as one of the federation’s states under the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.
This was in response to critics who claimed Tinubu’s victory should not have been recognized because he fell short of the statutory 25% threshold in the federal capital region.
Tinubu defeated Labor Party candidate Peter Obi, Peoples Democratic Party candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and New Nigeria Peoples Party candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
