President Bola Tinubu immediately removed Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), from office on Friday, 9 June 2023.

Tinubu also ordered Emefiele to immediately take over his office’s business to Mr. Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate).

Early Life

Education

Shonubi earned a BSc. and MSc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Lagos between 1978 and 1983 and an MSc in Business Administration specializing in Finance between 1988 and 1989.

Career

He began his career as a Consultant Engineer at Mek-and Associates, where he worked from 1984 until 1989. He worked as a Marketing Executive at Inlaks Computers Limited from 1989 to 1990.

From 1990 to 1993, he worked as the Head of Treasury Operations at Citibank Nigeria Limited. From 1993 to 1996, he worked as a Supervising Consultant at Agusto & Co. Ltd, after which he moved to MBC International Limited as Deputy General Manager, Banking Operations & Information Technology, in 1999. He joined First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited in 1999 as Vice-President, Operations & Information Technology, remaining until 2002.

He went from FCMB to Ecobank Nigeria Plc as Executive Director, Operations & Information Technology in 2003 and then to Renaissance Securities Nigeria Limited as Director, Information Technology and Corporate Services in 2007. From September 2009 to April 2012, he worked for Union Bank of Nigeria Limited as an Executive Director, Operations, Technology, and Services.

From May 2012 to October 2018, he was the Managing Director/CEO of Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc. Since 9 December 2019, Mr Folashodun has served as the Deputy Governor, Operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), representing the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on the Board of FIRS. 

Following the suspension of Godwin Emefiele, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated him as interim Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on 9 June 2023.

Emefiele Suspension

Emefiele’s suspension as CBN governor was announced in a statement by Willie Bassey, Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect,” the statement said.

“This is a sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.

“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.”

Shonubi, Great Choice As Acting Governor Of CBN, An Expert Says

Mr Okechukwu Unegbu, a financial expert, commended President Bola Tinubu’s choice of Folashodun Shonubi as the acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, as a wise one.

President Tinubu removed Godwin Emefiele as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on Friday evening.

Shonubi, CBN’s Deputy Governor, Operations Directorate, was asked to transfer over the business of Emefiele’s office.

According to Unegbu, Shonubi is an experienced banker and an excellent public finance specialist who will competently hold the fort till the Emefiele concerns are resolved, or a substantive Governor for the central bank is chosen.

He praised Tinubu for appointing Shonubi as acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Unegbu commended Tinubu for his economic decisions since he assumed office while urging him not to be in a rush.

“The president is doing some good job and taking actions that are sympathetic to the Nigerian public.

“But I will suggest that the president take things easy. He should not be in a rush.

“Nigeria is such a complex country, and a lot of things have gone wrong over the years. If the president wants to rush things, he might get into trouble,” he said.

List of Central Bank of Nigeria employees

In 2021, The Central Bank of Nigeria announced the appointment of new cbn directors in addition to the list of cbn assistant directors.

The bank also announced the confirmation of Osita Nwanisobi as its director, of the Corporate Communications Department.

Mr. Nwanisobi, who held the position in an acting capacity since October 2020, succeeds Isaac Okorafor, following his retirement from service.

According to the release by the bank, seven other directors were appointed into various positions that became vacant following the retirement of their previous occupiers.

Those appointed include Elizabeth Omolara Fasoranti, as Director, Branch Operations; Abdulkadir Abdullahi Jibril as Director, Medical Services, and Rashidat Jumoke Monguno, who is now the director in the Consumer Protection Department (CPD) of the bank.

Amina Habib has been appointed as Director of Human Resources, Blaise Ijebor as Director of Risk Management, Chibuzo Anthony Efobi as Director of Financial Policy and Regulation, and Benjamin Nnadi as Director of Reserve Management complete the list of cbn directors.

According to the CBN, the appointments will take effect on August 25, 2021.
