Lionel Messi, a national hero of Argentina, has only revealed one reason why he is still playing for the team.
The 35-year-old claims that the only reason he is still on the men’s senior national squad is because they won the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
Messi utterly dominated the competition as La Albiceleste won the World Cup for the third time in team history.
Messi ended the competition with seven goals and three assists. He also earned the World Cup Golden Ball for the second time for his heroics.
Speaking after Argentina defeated Australia 2-0 in a friendly game on Thursday, with Messi and German Pezzella getting on the score sheet, the 35-year-old said he would not be in the Argentine side anymore had they not won the World Cup in 2022.
He said, as quoted by All About Argentina, “To be honest, if we hadn’t been the World Champions… I wouldn’t be in the national team anymore.”
