President Bola Tinubu named airports in honor of certain late notable Nigerians, like Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chuba Okadigbo.
A few federal airports have also had their names changed to honor notable Nigerians who are still alive, like Tinubu’s predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
The Federal Ministry of Aviation announced the renaming of the airports in a memo on Monday that was dated June 1, 2023 and was signed by Mrs. Joke Olatunji for the Director of Airport Operations.
In the announcement, it was stated that the renaming of the airports was done “as part of reforms of the Aviation sector.”
The airports in Port Harcourt and Nasarawa were renamed in honor of the late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo and the late founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, Usman, respectively. The Maiduguri airport was renamed in his honor.
