“The Constitution Of Nigeria Is A Military Document Imposed On The People” – Tunji Abajomi

Tunji Abajomi, a Political Affairs Analyst, has made a stunning assertion, claiming that Nigeria’s constitution is a military document foisted on the Nigerian people.

Mr. Abajomi, a long-time watcher of Nigerian politics and administration, stated that the only approach to build unity in the varied country is to guarantee that the constitution really reflects the desire and ambitions of the people.

He went on to say that Nigeria is a unique country with many ethnic groups spread across several geographical zones. He emphasised that this unique makeup necessitates a constitution that reflects all of its citizens’ combined input.

According to Abajomi, the existing constitution was enforced upon the Nigerian people by military rulers, without sufficient input or agreement from the populace. He contends that the constitution’s legitimacy lies not in its content, but in the process by which it was formulated.

He said: “The best way to unite Nigeria is to provide for the people of Nigeria. Nigeria is a unique nation. Unique in the sense that there is no nation in the world where the various ethnic groups by the design of providence located in different geographical zones. That is why I said that the constitution of Nigeria is a military document that was forced on the people. If you want to have a constitution in a nation with so many nationalities you sit around the table.

“It is not a government that gives a nation a constitution, it is the constitution that gives a nation a government. But in our case, it was a military government that forced the Constitution on us.

It is not the content of the constitution that validates it but the procedure of making a constitution. So, at a point, as part of building our unity, we will have to take a look at the structure of the nation.

I am not talking about restructuring. How do you restructure a nation that does not have an adequate structure? The adequate structure is the agreement by the people on the type of government that they want.”
