JUST IN: Chinese warships arrive Nigeria

The MSL Destroyer NANNING, a Chinese warship, has arrived in Lagos as part of a diplomatic mission to Nigeria.

The Western Naval Command delegation, led by Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan, welcomed the Chinese ship.

The Nigerian government has not yet issued a formal announcement regarding the warship’s arrival.

Several Chinese naval ships visited Nigeria in 2014 as part of a friendly visit and engaged in training exercises with the Nigerian Navy.

On Saturday, the supply ship Taihu, the Type 054A guided missile frigate Yancheng, and the Type 053H guided missile frigate Luoyang made their way to Lagos as part of the 16th naval escort squad.

Gu Xiaojie, the Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, and Rear Admiral Zhu Xiang welcomed the Chinese fleet and its 600+ crew members.
