During a Twitter chat on Thursday, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi remarked, “If colonial masters could build a rail in the 1960s, what has changed today?” He claimed that the trains carried the majority of agricultural supplies from the north to Lagos.
Peter Obi further claimed that the tracks in Kafanchan were primarily utilized to load cargo bound for Lagos.
He went on to say that the government may boost the agriculture sector by building railways and other modes of transportation. He went on to say that the issue of various taxes is plagued by corruption and should be addressed by the government.
According to him, “Sometimes I just say, How did we arrive here if the colonial masters were able to build a rail in the 1960s to make sure that they transported the food from the north, Kano, everywhere in the north to the south, and to export? What has changed today? These are the 1960s.
I went to southern Kaduna, and I saw rails in Kafanchan. Somebody told me from Kafanchan that they used to load agricultural products that went to Lagos. If that happened in the 1960s, why can’t we do it today? On the issue of multiple taxation, all those are again bothered by corruption and transactions, which you are determined to eliminate. Where are the corporations that the government can support?”
