Early Life

Chukwudi Iwuji (born 15 October 1975). He is one of five Nigerian siblings born to diplomat parents. When Iwuji was 10, they joined the United Nations, and the family moved to Ethiopia.

Iwuji Chukwudi was sent to an English boarding school at the age of 12. During the years 1987 to 1993, he attended Surrey’s Caterham School. The first Black kid to hold that position in the school’s history, he was voted Head Boy.

His undergraduate studies in economics were completed at Yale University in 1997. He participated in The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Professional Theatre Training Programme (PTTP) in 2000. After that, he returned to the UK.

In 2001, Chukwudi Iwuji started giving performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2001, he played Claudius in the Hamlet and Julius Caesar production by Edward Hall, respectively. He performed the roles of Aufidius in Coriolanus and Fenton in The Merry Wives of Windsor in 2002. In the relaunch of This England: The Histories in 2006, he took over David Oyelowo’s role as Henry VI, the trilogy’s title character. According to Iwuji’s description of the character, “In Henry VI, the musicality is different: the thoughts are very structured.” The performance took home the Best Revival Olivier Award.

Iwuji portrayed Enobarbus in the 2013 RSC and The Public Theatre in New York co-production of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Antony and Cleopatra, which had a Caribbean theme.

He portrayed Edgar in King Lear in 2014. Hamlet was one of the roles he performed for The Public’s Mobile Unit in 2016, and he described the character as “this ugly, relentless beast that’s about to be unleashed.” In 2018, he appeared in The Low Road at the Public as Blanke and as Othello at the Delacorte Theatre for Shakespeare in the Park alongside Corey Stoll as Iago.

Chukwudi Iwuji has collaborated with several different theatres. He performed at the Royal National Theatre‘s Peter Hall’s Bacchai production in 2002. He acted as Booth in Playboy of the Western World’s Topdog/Underdog Christy at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Julian in The Misanthrope by Thea Sharrock, and a significant cast member of The Vote at the Donmar Warehouse in 2015.

He appeared in Welcome to Thebes at the Royal National Theatre in 2010, Richard III at the Old Vic in 2011, Tamburlaine off-Broadway in 2014, for which theatre reviewer Ben Brantley praised him as “a standout,” and Obsession and Hedda Gabbler with director Ivo van Hove in 2016–17.

Chukwudi Iwuji Shares the Story Behind His Casting in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The new film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 introduces Chukwudi Iwuji as the newest villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and many fans believe he is the most heinous of them all. Iwuji plays the High Evolutionary in the film, a menace to the Guardians who some claim is more evil than Thanos and Kang the Conqueror. The actor’s performance has received considerable praise, with moviegoers and critics agreeing that the casting is ideal given how good Iwuji is in the character.

In an interview with Variety, Iwuji remembers when he was first cast in the role, revealing how he came very close to turning it down. At the time the offer came in, the actor had already been working with James Gunn on the HBO Max series Peacemaker, so he was quite familiar with the director. Even so, he doubted he would actually get the part, believing there were other Black actors in Hollywood he presumed would get the offer before he would.

“I was like, I could name three or four go-tos further up the ladder than me that this is going to, so I’m not going to bother,” Iwuji reveals. “I just thought they should get the late, great Lance Reddick to do it.”

Ultimately, Iwuji recorded an audition for the role with the help of his wife, Angela Travino, who found the material to be “hilarious.” Even if the actor was not expecting to get the part, his audition made an impact on Gunn, who also shared why he wanted to cast Iwuji as the High Evolutionary.

“He was able to play an alien of extraordinary empathy and integrity who took over the body and memories of a sociopathic mercenary and was somehow able to convey all of those character aspects at once… His performance was nuanced and layered and unlike anyone else who auditioned,” Gunn explained.
