Tribunal sacks Lagos Labour Party’s House Of Reps Member, declares APC candidate as winner

The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal, which is now sitting in Lagos, is claimed to have ousted Hon. Seyi Sowunmi, the Labour Party’s representative in the House of Representatives in Lagos State’s Ojo Federal Constituency. Lanre Ogunyemi, the APC candidate, has taken his place.

According to a report by Channels Television, a three-member panel headed by Justice Abdullahi Ozegya has acknowledged that Lanre Ogunyemi, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was the legitimate victor of the national assembly election held on February 25, 2023.

The tribunal ruled in favor of the petitioner, stating that the Labour Party’s candidate, Sownmi, was not eligible to participate in the national assembly elections on February 25. As a result, his votes were considered invalid. The tribunal also acknowledged that the candidate who came in second place, Ogunyemi from the APC, should have been declared the winner of the Ojo Federal Constituency.

Hon Ogunyemi, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly for two terms, took legal action to dispute the announcement made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that LP’s Sowunmi was the winner of the national assembly election on February 25. The basis for the challenge was that the respondent was not properly endorsed and did not meet the qualifications to run for the Labour Party in the Ojo Federal Constituency.
