Burna Boy, a Grammy-winning Nigerian musician, has been nominated for seven BET Hip-Hop Awards in 2023.
The self-proclaimed African Giant is tied for third place with DJ Khaled, trailing Drake with nine nominations and Cardi B and 21 Savage, who both have 12 nominations.
Burna Boy also made history as the first African artist to be nominated in the Artiste of the Year category at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. In this category, he will compete with Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, 21 Savage, Drake, Cardi B, and others.
His additional nominations encompass Song of the Year for “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” featuring 21 Savage, Best Hip-Hop Video for the same track, Best Collaboration for the same song, Best Live Performer, Lyricist of the Year, and Hustler of the Year.
This year marks the first time since the creation of the Best International Flow category in 2019 that no Nigerian rapper has received a nomination.
Notably, Ghana’s Black Sherif, Zambia’s Sampa The Great, and South African rappers K.O and AKA were nominated in the Best International Flow category.
The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards are set to be recorded in Atlanta on Tuesday, October 3, and will premiere on BET one week later, on Tuesday, October 10, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
