Funke Akindele, a well-known Nollywood actress and filmmaker, recently shared her experiences of being denied major roles in the film industry because of her physical appearance.
In an episode of the TokeMoments podcast hosted by Toke Makinwa, Akindele revealed how she was labeled as “ugly” and consequently overlooked for significant roles.
Even in Yoruba indigenous movies, she faced rejection due to her physique.
Thankfully, actress Iyabo Ojo offered her assistance during these difficult times, intervening when filmmakers disregarded her based on looks.
Akindele expressed her frustration at being given only minor roles, often leading her to tears.
“I remember people telling me, ‘You are not fine. You don’t have ass. You don’t have boobs. You will not be in this film,” she recalled.
“And, I remember crying. A lot of times I would cry, break down, get into the bathroom and cry.”
