According to a statement published on their website, The Recording Academy, the organizers of the Grammy Awards, have stated that there is no Afrobeats star or African artist who surpasses Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, also known as Burna Boy.
The Academy congratulated Burna Boy and other nominees for the newly created Best African Music Performance category at the 2024 Grammys.
They praised Burna Boy for his collaborations with global stars like Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber, as well as his achievement of a UK No. 1 album this year with “I Told Them…” which has a classic hip-hop influence and features appearances from prominent artists.
The Academy said, “There’s not a bigger star in Afrobeats, or even the whole of Africa itself, than Burna Boy. He nabbed two consecutive Best Global Album GRAMMY nods for his albums Twice as Tall and African Giant, and he’s also collaborated with global stars such as Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.”
Burna Boy’s song “City Boys” has been nominated in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category alongside tracks from Davido, Musa Keys, Ayra Starr, Asake and Olamide, and Tyla.
