Appeal court declares Zamfara Guber election Inconclusive

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has declared that the March 18 governorship election in Zamfara State was inconclusive.

The court overturned the return of Governor Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the winner of the gubernatorial election in a unanimous ruling by a three-member panel of Justices.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been tasked with organizing a new election in three of the state’s Local Government Areas (LGAs). This directive applies to places where elections were not initially held or where the results of multiple voting units were not evaluated.

Justice Sybil Nwaka, in delivering the lead judgment, emphasized that the court deemed it inappropriate for INEC to base the compilation of the governorship election’s final result on information sourced from its IReV portal.

The court’s decision came after an appeal was filed by the former governor of the state, Bello Matawalle, who ran as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the election.
