Veekee James, a well-known designer, has made headlines for her creations, business decisions, and personal life.
Following her interview with Teawithtay, the designer primarily operates in the Nigerian market and has provoked a heated controversy.
During the interview, James revealed why, although headquartered in Nigeria, she priced her services in US dollars.
This discovery sparked outrage among netizens, who have long been critical of Nigerian firms that price their goods and services in foreign currency.
The criticism derives from the assumption that such methods exclude and undermine the Nigerian Naira.
Dotun, a media personality and OAP, was outspoken in his condemnation of James. He stated that while it is normal for American firms to charge in dollars and British businesses in pounds, it does not justify Nigerian businesses, such as James’, charging in foreign currencies.
Dotun stressed that this behavior harms the Nigerian economy and devalues the Naira. He remarked on the absurdity of James charging in dollars while paying taxes and her staff in Naira, calling into question the fairness and logic of such a business strategy.
Dotun’s remarks reflect a broader view among Nigerians, who believe that billing in foreign currency is unjustifiable, particularly when the major clientele is Nigerian. He advised firms to standardize their pricing in Naira in order to promote the local economy and currency.
