Steve Harvey, an American television host and filmmaker, has stated that African artists like Burna Boy did not steal from American music as some in the West may believe.
Instead, Steve Harvey believes that it is the West, particularly America, that draws inspiration from African beats, rhythm, and soul.
“People claim Burna Boy stole this, no we stole from Burna Boy. Africans are the beats, soul, rhythm, and hard work that inspire our courage,” the comedian said in a recent episode of his television show.
Recall that Burna Boy made it clear in an interview with Apple Music last year that he does not categorize his music as Afrobeats, but rather as Afrofusion.
He described Afrofusion as a blend of American hip-hop, R&B, soul, Jamaican reggae and dancehall, along with elements of African music.
Burna Boy made history by being nominated in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category at the 66th Grammys, marking the first time an African artist had been nominated in this category which was previously dominated by Western artists.
Although he did not win the award, some in the West accused Burna Boy of trying to appropriate Western musical styles.
