Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Adegoke Fayoade, stated that the command provided water and biscuits to protesters in order to prevent collapse.
In an interview with NAN in Lagos, Fayoade expressed concern for the long distance and hot weather faced by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) protesters, stressing the importance of providing basic refreshments for a successful protest.
“I provided water and biscuits because I don’t want anyone to collapse on the way. We have to use water to strengthen everybody. That is the least we could do,” he said.
“The protest went on as agreed with the NLC leadership. We promised them protection and we provided such from the beginning to the end.
“The same protection will be provided on Wednesday and I will be part of the operation.”
Fayoade assured the public of the police force’s commitment to maintaining the security of lives and properties, urging residents to report crimes promptly.
He noted that the protest was peaceful and that no arrests were made for any violations.
During the protest, many protesters were observed eagerly accepting refreshments distributed by police personnel from patrol vehicles.
The NLC protest is scheduled to continue on Wednesday.
