ASUU plans protest of half pay, declares lecture-free day

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has issued a warning about a potential nationwide strike.

The organization expressed disapproval regarding the Federal Government’s delay in appointing Governing Councils for Federal Universities.

Additionally, the union criticized the perceived lackadaisical approach of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government towards academic matters in Nigerian Federal Universities.

The group of scholars, while conducting a press conference at the University of Abuja, also raised concerns about the 35 per cent salary increase for professors and the 25 per cent salary increase for other academic staff within the university system.

ASUU viewed this increment as a salary adjustment that could be retracted by the government at its discretion.

In his address at the press conference, the President of the union, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, emphasized that they had given the Tinubu-led administration ample time to take action.

He highlighted the union’s unease over the Federal Government’s failure to appoint members to the Governing Councils of Federal universities.

Furthermore, Osodeke pointed out that the dissolution of the governing councils was deemed unlawful as it contradicted the foundational principles of the existing universities.
