JUST IN: Court refuses Abba Kyari bail after return from burying mum

US Court Orders FBI To Arrest Police Officer, Abba Kyari Over Hushpuppi’s Fraud Investigations

On Wednesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja denied bail to Abba Kyari, the suspended deputy Commissioner of Police.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has filed drug-related charges against the police officer after his detention on February 14, 2022.

Justice Emeka Nwite ruled that Kyari’s bail is at the court’s discretion, following Section 161 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

The judge stated that Kyari had not presented any evidence to the court to justify his release on bail.

He said bail can only be granted if the alleged offences carry a two-year term in line with Section 162 of the ACJA but in this case, the maximum sentence is 25 years.

Justice Nwite, on May 22, granted a temporary two-week bail to Kyari allowing him to return home and conclude the burial rites of his mother.

This was extended by a week following an application filed by Kyari.

After refusing to grant the suspended police officer bail, Justice Nwite ruled that the case should receive an accelerated hearing.
