Joan Laporta becomes Barcelona's 41st President

Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has revealed the reasons behind his decision to dismiss Xavi Hernandez as manager.

Throughout the last week of April, the club made attempts to convince Xavi to stay on board. However, Xavi’s comments about Barcelona’s financial struggles and their impact on competition with Real Madrid did not sit well with Laporta.

As a result, Xavi was let go within a month and Hansi Flick was appointed as his successor.

Speaking on ‘The President’s Podcast’ on Barça One, Laporta stated: “Xavi told me that he trusted this team, but then some of his statements looked like he changed his speech.

“It caused me to rethink and I had the feeling that I had to do a change, also with the same feeling shared with the board.”
