The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill to increase the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000, officially making it a law. During a plenary session in Abuja, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the bill’s approval following its third reading.
The bill, proposed by President Bola Tinubu after a meeting with organized labour leaders last week, also includes a provision to shorten the review period for the minimum wage from five years to three years. Akpabio outlined the bill’s intent during the plenary session and facilitated its approval.
“Distinguished colleagues, a bill to amend the National Minimum Wage Act 2019 and to increase the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000 and review the time for periodic review of the national minimum wage from five years to three years and for related matters 2024 has been taken and passed,” Akpabio stated.
