President Bola Tinubu is set to sign the newly approved bill that raises the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000 next week.
This legislation recently passed by the Nigeria Senate also includes provisions for reviewing the minimum wage every three years instead of the previous five-year period.
The announcement comes after discussions with organized labor leaders, aiming to improve the living standards of Nigerian workers.
The signing ceremony is expected in Abuja, further cementing this legislative milestone.
The Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters, Senator Abdullahi Gumel, confirmed the development.
“The bill will be transmitted today (Thursday),” he said.
The President is expected to give expeditious assent to the bill.
The Senate and the House of Representatives swiftly passed the National Minimum Wage Act 2019 (Amendment Bill).
The bill, which underwent second and third readings in both legislative chambers of the National Assembly within minutes of being transmitted by the President, was approved separately by the Senate and the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
The National Minimum Wage Bill passed its third reading and was approved by the Senate following a unanimous vote after being considered clause-by-clause by the Committee of the Whole.
The House of Representatives passed the bill immediately, mirroring the Senate’s actions.
The President had transmitted an executive bill on the new national minimum wage Bill to the National Assembly for consideration and passage.
