Euro 2024: Why England lost 2-1 to Spain – Southgate

2022 World Cup: Southgate drops Chelsea star from England's 26-man squad

In the Euro 2024 final, England’s manager Gareth Southgate admitted that his team’s lack of ball possession contributed to their defeat to Spain.

Despite their efforts, the Three Lions fell short in a 2-1 loss to La Roja. Nico Williams scored the first goal of the game, but Cole Palmer managed to equalize after being substituted in.

However, Spain ultimately secured the victory with a late goal from Mikel Oyarzabal.

“We’ve competed until the very end of the final, today we didn’t keep possession of the ball well enough,” Southgate told the BBC.

“Especially when we defended well, they pressed you really well and you’ve got to get out of that pressure, and we weren’t able to do that.

“That meant they had more control of the game, and that can wear you down a bit.

“That said, we were still right in there when we got the equaliser, the game was still wide open.

“As always in these games, it’s fine margins – but they were the best team in the tournament. Over the piece, they deserved it.”
