EPL: Chelsea face transfer ban, points deduction

Chelsea Football Club is currently confronted with the prospect of a transfer prohibition, as Premier League Chief Executive Officer Richard Masters has provided an update concerning the inquiry into the club for potential financial violations that occurred during Roman Abramovich’s ownership.

Abramovich held ownership of the club, commonly referred to as the Blues, from 2003 until 2022, at which point he was subjected to sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom government.

The individual, aged 57, was ultimately disqualified from serving as a director of the club subsequent to the onset of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.

Upon the acquisition of the club by the Todd Boehly-led consortium in May 2022, they disclosed instances of incomplete financial documentation during Abramovich’s period of ownership.

Subsequent reports by The Guardian and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism have unveiled leaked documents indicating that Abramovich purportedly utilized offshore companies to facilitate transactions with agents and associates, which seemingly conferred advantages to Chelsea.

These purported transactions amounted to tens of millions of pounds and could consequently constitute a violation of financial regulations if they were not duly reported.

In July 2023, UEFA imposed a financial penalty of €10 million on Chelsea for “submitting incomplete financial information” between the years 2012 and 2019.

However, the Premier League’s investigation—which could result in a financial penalty, points deduction, or transfer ban for the club—was intended to scrutinize potential connections between the offshore entities and individuals involved in the transfers.

Masters told talkSPORT: “What we’re talking about is something historic.

“It’s complicated where we have the club talking to us about things that have happened under a previous ownership.

“All I can say is that investigation is reaching a conclusion. But until it has done so, I can’t really say what is going to happen next.”
