Issa Hayatou, a former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has passed away after a long illness, as reported by straitstimes.com.
Issa Hayatou died on Thursday, just before his 78th birthday. He had served as the president of CAF for 29 years from 1988 to 2017.
Additionally, he briefly took on the role of acting FIFA president from 2015-2016, during Sepp Blatter‘s suspension.
In 2011, Hayatou faced criticism and punishment from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for his involvement in an alleged bribery scandal at FIFA.
He was accused of receiving money from a sports marketing company in 1995, but he maintained that it was a gift for his confederation.
