Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly attempted to arrest the former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, at the State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, on the night of Wednesday, September 18. The arrest attempt led to a tense standoff, with sporadic gunshots heard during the encounter.
The EFCC had earlier declared Yahaya Bello wanted over allegations of laundering N80.2 billion, and a 19-count charge was filed against him.
Despite the charges, security operatives stationed at the lodge resisted Bello’s arrest, escalating the situation.
Sources close to the incident revealed that after the standoff, Yahaya Bello eventually left the lodge with his political associate, Ododo.
Bello’s media office, through a statement issued by Director Ohiare Michael, condemned the EFCC’s actions, describing the attempted arrest as “needless” and carried out in a “Gestapo-like” manner.
The statement emphasized that Yahaya Bello had previously cooperated with the commission by voluntarily reporting to them, implying that such dramatic measures were unwarranted.
