Messi and Inter Miami have the most successful regular season in Major League Soccer history.
Messi scored his first hat trick in an Inter Miami jersey, and his second in five days, to lead the team to a 6-2 victory over the New England Revolution, setting an MLS record of 74 points in a season.
Messi delivered a great performance, leaving Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham stunned on the bench as he watched him at Chase Stadium.
Messi made it 5-2 with two goals in three minutes, in the 78th and 81st minutes, respectively. In the 89th minute, he scored his third goal, completing his hat trick.
It was Messi’s first game since scoring three goals and two assists in Argentina’s 6-0 victory over Bolivia in a World Cup 2026 qualifier last Tuesday.
Uruguay’s Luis Suarez also scored twice in a three-minute span (40′ and 43′) in the win, distinguishing Inter Miami from previous teams in MLS history.
Inter Miami’s 74 points surpass the Revolution’s previous high of 73 points established in 2021.
The contest was not without some trepidation, as New England’s Luca Langoni (2′) and Dylan Borrero (34′) almost nearly spoiled the occasion with early goals.
Messi and Suarez finish the MLS season with 20 goals each, trailing only D.C. United’s Christian Benteke for the league lead.
Inter Miami begins the MLS Cup Playoffs next Friday, against the winner of the Eastern Conference Wild-Card game, which is set for Tuesday.
