Augustine Eguavoen, the Super Eagles temporary head coach, has guaranteed that the players will give everything they have to win against Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic.
In September, Eguavoen took command of Nigeria’s 3-0 triumph over the Cheetahs.
The 59-year-old hopes to duplicate the feat at Abidjan’s Stade Félix Houphouet-Boigny.
No love was lost between Rohr and Nigeria since the German managed the Super Eagles from 2016 to 2021, taking them to the 2018 FIFA World Cup and a bronze medal at the AFCON 2019 competition. Nonetheless, Eguavoen stated that the familiarity between the two sides would not allow such feelings.
“We worked with Gernot Rohr for so many years. He was our head coach, and he’s a very good one, no doubt. He knows us in and out, he’s part of us, but we know him inside out as well.
“We know what he’s capable of, and he knows Nigeria is a country you don’t tolerate. We respect them, and we’ll play with the mindset that we come into games with and that’s to win, but it’s easier said than done.
“We’ll fight for every ball, fight for every point, and that’s what we want to do tomorrow. In respect to that, Benin is not a pushover, but we will work hard to make sure we achieve our objective,” Eguavoen said in his pre-game conference.
