Omoni Oboli, a Nollywood actress and director, explains why she avoids participating in her son’s marriage and respects her daughter-in-law’s independence, even though she has reservations.
During her latest visit on the Dear Ife podcast with Ifedayo Agoro, the mother of three I discussed how she respects her son and daughter-in-law.
Oboli explained that she empathizes with her daughter-in-law by seeing herself in her shoes rather than relying simply on her perspective.
Drawing on her own experiences, she stated that she, too, married at 21—the same age as her daughter-in-law married her son—and was fairly strong-willed. Recognizing her youthful resistance, Oboli realizes that her daughter-in-law would prefer not to be governed.
The seasoned actress also emphasized the importance of sons being able to communicate openly with their mothers on behalf of their wives, reinforcing healthy family boundaries and mutual respect.
“There’s been a few times when my son has come to meet me to say, ‘Mum, Marelle does not like that’ and I have to catch myself back and say ‘Oh, I didn’t mean it that way.’ And it’s okay. So, the fact that your child cannot come to you to say ‘my wife doesn’t like this’, that’s a problem in itself,” she stated.
“I think, first things first, people need to understand and realise that this is now another family. Yes, they are still a part of your family but they now have their own family,” she opined.
