The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced that the new Port Harcourt refinery is now over 90 percent complete.
Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, made this announcement on Monday during a visit to the facility by labor leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State.
CREEBHILLS recalls that after a prolonged period marked by at least seven missed deadlines, NNPC has finally initiated the phase one operation of the Port Harcourt oil refinery, which has a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day (bpd).
The rehabilitation of the total 210,000 bpd refinery commenced in 2021 following the federal government’s procurement of a $1.5 billion contract aimed at restoring the facility, which had suffered years of neglect.
Initially, NNPC did not disclose the quantities of petrol, diesel, jet fuel, and naphtha that the refinery would produce, which was contrary to global best practices.
Nevertheless, in response to public scrutiny, the national oil company subsequently announced that it was refining 1.4 million litres of petrol per day, a figure that is considered exceedingly low by industry standards.
