South Korean president facing police investigation for alleged ‘insurrection’

According to a senior official, South Korean police are investigating President Yoon Suk Yeol for “insurrection” following his brief declaration of martial law.

The investigation comes as trade unions hold a countrywide strike and MPs consider impeaching the president.

Woo Jong Soo, the chief of the National Police Agency’s National Investigation Headquarters, informed MPs that “the case has been assigned.”

In South Korea, insurrection is punishable by death.
