Actress Toyin Abraham has addressed a statement she made in an appreciation post for her new film Alakada: Bad and Boujee, disputing suggestions that it was directed at her colleagues, specifically Funke Akindele and Mercy Aigbe.
Toyin thanked her fans for their support in an Instagram post on Monday, announcing that her recently released movie is the second-best grossing Nollywood film in 2024.
In her caption, she thanked fans for watching the movie without demanding anything.
The statement, however, aroused conjecture that it was a covert barb at colleagues renowned for giving out gifts during meet-and-greet sessions at cinemas.
Addressing the controversy, she shared a video on Instagram of herself interacting with fans at the cinema.
The award-winning actress explained that her comments were misinterpreted.
She noted that her post was prompted by reports from her team about some fans refusing to watch her film without receiving gifts.
“I have seen many messages suggesting that my post about the three-day box office performance of Alakada: Bad and Boujee was intended as shade. Please, that is not true,” she wrote.
Toyin revealed that the movie earned N58 million in just three days, attributing the success to fans who supported her work without demanding incentives.
She emphasised that the post was meant to celebrate such fans and not to criticise her colleagues.
“The movie itself is a gift of love and hard work, packed with quality entertainment. Reaching this milestone is a testament to the love and support of those I couldn’t give anything to. Thank you for seeing my movie,” she added.
The mother of one urged her fans to avoid drawing negative conclusions, stressing her appreciation for their continued support.
