Authorities have announced that the USS Gettysburg mistakenly shot down a US Navy F/A-18 Hornet at the Red Sea.
The US Central Command confirmed the incident, labeling it as “friendly fire.”
Two crew members ejected safely, with one sustaining minor injuries.
“The guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg mistakenly fired on and hit the F/A-18,” the statement read, describing the incident as a “friendly fire” error.
The incident occurred after the US conducted airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthi militant targets in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, to disrupt Houthi operations and protect international shipping in the region.
It is uncertain whether the jet was participating in the Yemen operation at the time.
