Burna Boy went down memory lane, reminiscing about his early days in the music industry.
In one of his unearthed old interviews, he disclosed that his rise to fame began with an internship at Rhythm FM in Port Harcourt in 2010.
Burna Boy revealed that during his tenure at Rhythm FM, he used the chance to promote his music, beginning with a single that unexpectedly acquired traction in the region.
He released more singles, including “Abeg, ABeg,” which helped him gain exposure in the South-South and establish himself as a local champion.
The singer recalled performing at shows in the South and earning between 100,000 and 200,000 Naira, a significant amount for a local artist at the time.
He also shared a notable experience where he was scheduled to perform at an MTN show but was initially kicked off the lineup by Mohits, a prominent music group.
However, the crowd’s enthusiasm and chants for Burna Boy forced the organizers to bring him back on stage, where he delivered an electrifying performance.
Despite being limited to performing just one song, the audience’s demand for more made the performance unforgettable.
Burna Boy’s reflections on his humble beginnings testify to his perseverance and dedication to his craft.
Burna Boy’s journey inspires aspiring artists from his early days as an intern to his current status as a global music sensation. It reminds them that success often requires hard work, determination, and a bit of luck.
He said:
“At the time, I was like an intern on Rhythm Man 3.7 in Portharcourt, and yeah, I just used that opportunity to start.
Yeah, man, so basically, yeah, I just used that opportunity to plug in my little single that I had recorded at the time, and it just surprisingly picked up in that region of life.
Just started my thing there, and then I just kept on releasing singles there.
I released A Beg, A Beg, which just really exposed me to the South.
Yeah, was it? Yeah, I was. Exactly, exactly. So I was doing shows out there in the South, you know, for 100K to 100K.
They did one MTN show back in the day, and I was built to perform, but at the time, Mohits was winning.
So, Mohits said they would kick me off. That was what they tried to do. So Mohits came, and they said they had to perform then and there, like that time. So they cancelled every other performance.
So I was supposed to perform, and then the crowd started screaming my name. You can confirm this with any MTN worker from the day.
And the crowd just started screaming, like really hype, and so they had to bring me on. We’ll be right back. But then they tried to make me perform one song. And then after that one song, they kept asking for, it was crazy, it was crazy. ”
