In her first speech of the year at an event organized by British think tank Onward, Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, expressed her concern about the potential consequences of poor governance, referencing Nigeria as an example.
Badenoch emphasized the importance of building trust and highlighted the Conservative Party as the solution to fixing issues in Britain.
“And why does this matter so much to me? It’s because I know what it is like to have something and then to lose it,” Kemi Badenoch told the audience. I don’t want Britain to lose what it has.
“I grew up in a poor country and watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer, despite working harder and harder as their money disappeared with inflation.
“I came back to the UK aged 16 with my father’s last £100 in the hope of a better life.
“So I have lived with the consequences of terrible governments that destroy lives, and I never, ever want it to happen here,” she said.
Kemi Badenoch remarks, criticizing Nigeria as a model of ineffective governance, have drawn criticism from Nigerian leaders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who accused Badenoch of constantly belittling her home country. Badenoch’s previous comments describing Nigeria as a socialist nation have fueled further debate.
