The All Progressives Congress (APC) has downplayed speculations about a possible political alliance between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In an interview with The Punch, the National Secretary of the APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru, dismissed the development, stating that it poses no threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Basiru’s comments come in response to a high-profile meeting between Obasanjo and Atiku in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Monday. Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, led a delegation that included former Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, and ex-Governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke, among other political figures.
Although the details of the meeting remain unclear, speculations are rife that it is connected to Atiku’s rumored 2027 presidential ambition. When asked about the purpose of the visit, Atiku downplayed its political significance, stating, “I am here on a courtesy call. I am not here to talk politics.”
However, a source privy to the discussion hinted that the talks were centered on a possible collaboration. “Yes, we are trying to see how we can collectively work together to salvage this country ahead of 2027,” the source claimed.
“They Are Indolent Politicians” – APC Fires Back
Reacting to the reports, APC’s National Secretary, Basiru, dismissed the meeting as irrelevant, describing it as a gathering of “indolent and lazy” politicians.
“We don’t react to other people’s acts as a political party. We only do our own things. Presently, our plate is full. We are focusing on winning the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State and delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. We don’t have time for talks on any political meetings,” Basiru stated.
He further dismissed any notion that Obasanjo and Atiku’s meeting posed a challenge to the APC.
“How can people who are in disarray be a threat to a solid political party like the APC? We are not worried. Our focus remains on winning elections and running the government effectively.”
As political realignments continue ahead of 2027, the possibility of an Obasanjo-Atiku alliance remains a subject of interest in Nigeria’s political landscape. However, the APC insists that it remains unfazed by such developments.
