The Lagos State Government has announced plans to mark and demolish illegal buildings on Banana Island starting Monday.
This was disclosed by Mr. Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), during a stakeholders’ meeting on the upscale island.
Why the Demolition?
According to Oki, the affected buildings:
✅ Encroach on prohibited areas
✅ Violate building codes
✅ Pose serious safety risks
Government’s Plan
🔹 From Monday to Friday, LASBCA officials will mark the buildings
🔹 Owners will have two weeks to present their documents
🔹 After the deadline, demolition will begin
Oki specifically mentioned structures built under high-tension power lines and those too close to the shoreline, stating that public safety is more important than property value.
