The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning, threatening to embark on a nationwide strike starting March 1, 2025, if telecommunications companies fail to reverse the recent 50% tariff hike.
Why is the NLC Protesting?
The NLC argues that the tariff increase was implemented without due process, despite ongoing negotiations between the government, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and telecom operators.
At its Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Lokoja, Kogi State, the labour union strongly condemned the price hike, stating:
“The CWC received with grave concern the news that telecom companies have commenced the implementation of a 50 per cent tariff hike despite an earlier agreement reached with the Nigerian government and the NCC.”
The union also highlighted that a 10-man committee had been set up to review the issue within two weeks before any final decision on the new tariff structure.
NLC’s Next Steps: Boycott and Strike Threat
As an immediate response, the NLC has directed Nigerians to boycott major telecom operators, including MTN, Glo, and Airtel, starting February 13, 2025.
Additionally, the union is demanding an investigation into alleged funds siphoned abroad by telecom companies.
What Happens Next?
With the March 1 strike deadline looming, all eyes are on the government and telecom operators to see if they will reverse the tariff hike or risk nationwide industrial action.
📌 Will telecom companies comply, or will Nigeria face another major strike? Stay tuned for updates!
