American actress Kerry Washington has officially sided with Nigerian Jollof in the long-standing rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana over who makes the best version of the popular West African dish.
Speaking on the red carpet at the 56th NAACP Image Awards last month, Washington—married to former NFL player and actor Nnamdi Asomugha—was asked to weigh in on the debate.
Initially hesitant, she eventually declared, “Don’t bring me into this, but of course, anything Naija is going to be better. It’s Naija. That is the truth.”
The Scandal star also revealed that the Jollof battle goes beyond Nigeria and Ghana. Her husband and Shadow Force co-star Omar Sy frequently debate whether Senegalese or Nigerian Jollof reigns supreme.
Omar Sy, a French actor of Mauritanian and Senegalese descent, passionately defends Senegal’s claim as the birthplace of Jollof rice.
Washington, 43, remains one of Hollywood’s most influential actresses. She won the NAACP award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for her role as Major Charity Adams, the commanding officer of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, in Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight.
Meanwhile, Shadow Force, her upcoming action thriller, is set for release on May 2, promising an intense and gripping storyline.
