Mojisola Meranda has stepped down as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, citing her decision as a personal sacrifice to safeguard the integrity of the legislative institution. She resigned during a plenary session on Monday, March 3, 2025.
Her resignation was followed by other key principal officers—Deputy Speaker Mojeed Fatai, Chief Whip Setonji David, and Deputy Chief Whip Sani Okanlawon—who also tendered their resignations. However, in a swift restructuring, Setonji David was reappointed as Deputy Chief Whip, while Mojeed Fatai assumed the role of Chief Whip.
These changes come in the wake of a deepening leadership crisis that began with the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in January 2025. This impeachment caused internal divisions among lawmakers and party leaders.
The Assembly is set to reconvene soon to elect new leadership and restore stability to its operations.
