Veteran actress Nambitha Mpumlwana, renowned for her roles in Generations and Soft Life, is at the center of a legal controversy after allegedly being caught shoplifting at Dis-Chem in Ferndale Mall, Randburg.
According to sources, store security detained the actress last week for allegedly attempting to leave without paying for a lipstick valued at R160.
Legal Proceedings and Mpumlwana’s Response
Law enforcement was alerted, and upon arrival, police identified the suspect as Mpumlwana.
While acknowledging the incident, the actress insists it was a misunderstanding.
“It was just a mix-up,” she said, requesting that all media inquiries be submitted in writing for an official response.
Following her arrest, Mpumlwana was taken to Randburg Police Station and later released on R1,000 bail. She appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on March 20 but did not enter a plea. The case has been postponed to May 2, when she is expected to do so.
Store Takes a Firm Stance
A police officer familiar with the case noted that such minor offenses are often resolved without legal action, but Dis-Chem chose to proceed.
“They likely wanted to make an example of the situation and show that no one is above the law,” the officer stated.
Public Reactions
The incident has sparked mixed reactions, with some arguing that public figures should not receive special treatment, while others question the necessity of an arrest for such a minor case.
As the legal process unfolds, Mpumlwana’s supporters and the general public await further developments.
