Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, has issued a public apology following the backlash over her viral video, where she criticized Nigeria’s economic state and alleged a foul smell in Lagos.
Raye’s remarks sparked widespread reactions, leading the Local Government Inspector (LGI) to attempt to summon her for disciplinary action.
“I AM SORRY” – Raye Clarifies Intentions
Addressing the controversy, Raye took to her Instagram page to express remorse over how her words were perceived.
“I want to first of all state that I AM SORRY to the people who were born and raised in Lagos if you feel offended by what I said.”
She explained that her observations about Lagos’ air quality were not meant as insults but rather as honest reflections from a visitor’s perspective.
“As a visitor here, I could tell there was a difference in the atmosphere and quality of air. If the way I put it triggered emotions and your love for your birth state, I am sorry. I didn’t mean to talk down on Lagos.”
Viral Video Was Part of “30-Day Rant Challenge”
Raye also revealed that her viral comments were part of a personal challenge, where she planned to voice her frustrations about Nigeria’s economic situation for 30 days.
However, she admitted she never expected the video to gain traction so quickly, saying:
“I intended to reach at least Day 20 before getting any attention, but the video went viral on the first day.”
Defends Criticism of Cost of Living
The corps member stood by her concerns about affordability in Nigeria, especially for young professionals.
“I work 45+ hours a week and should be able to afford hanging out with my friends every weekend. However, I can’t. But how many of us can actually afford that?”
Encourages Nigerians to Keep Demanding Better
Despite the backlash, Raye urged Nigerians to focus on the bigger picture—demanding better living conditions.
“If we stay committed to asking for better, we will get better.”
Her apology has since sparked mixed reactions, with some accepting it and others maintaining that she should have been more careful with her words.
